Why Are Routines Important for Preschoolers?

March 12th, 2017

As children grow, constant changes in everyday life can throw them for a loop causing stress and anxiety about what is to come. Instead of voicing these concerns, children will often act out in other ways leading to power struggles and tantrums (or major meltdowns). Sticking to routines whenever possible can help avoid the struggles that come with the uncertainty of growing up.

Benefits of Routines for Children

  • Stability: Many changes in a child’s life are out of her control, such as a move to a new house, school, or class. Daily routines provide a sense of security in an ever-changing world allowing her to focus on exploring the world around her.
  • Self-discipline: The predictability of a regular schedule gives children the opportunity to practice self-control. If a child knows a certain task will be followed by something he enjoys, he will be much more likely to complete the task without argument.
  • Independence: When a child knows what’s expected of her, she can follow the schedule without being told what to do next. This gives her a sense of responsibility, independence, and accomplishment.
  • Reduced stress: Removing the constant worry from your child’s life leads to reduced stress not only for your child, but for yourself as well.
  • Teaches healthy habits: Routines including simple steps such as washing hands or brushing teeth are a great way to teach children healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
  • Strengthens bonds: Incorporating family time into your daily schedule is a great opportunity for building a strong bond with your children. For more tips, visit our article on how to fit family time into your busy schedule.

Routines are especially important during the most difficult times of the day such as mornings, mealtimes, and bedtime. You’ll be amazed by how much easier it will be to get out the door in the morning with a simple routine in place.
